小さな木の部材が組み合って生まれる、シェル構造のパビリオン
A shell-structure pavilion born from small interlocking timber parts
乃村工藝社が描いたシェル構造の基本形状を、デジタルファブリケーションで実現可能な幾何学に置き換える実施設計を担当した。全体は一体の曲面に見えるが、実際には小さな木材を組み合わせて構成されている。小さな部材を組み合わせて大きな構造をつくるという点で、日本の伝統木造と共通する構法である。
A shell-structure pavilion born from small interlocking timber parts
VUILD handled the detailed design that translated the basic shell form drawn by NOMURA Co., Ltd. into a geometry achievable with digital fabrication. The whole appears as a single curved surface, but it is actually made of small pieces of timber fitted together. Building a large structure from small members is a method shared with traditional Japanese timber construction.

全体形状を三角形の面に分割し、各面の重心で3本の梁が交差するよう計画した。3本の梁が交わる接合部にはアスタリスク状のパーツを取り付け、交点の開きを防いで強度を高めている。その上に三角形のパネルを取り付けて全体を構成した。
Construction Process
The overall form was divided into triangular faces, with three beams crossing at the centroid of each face. Asterisk-shaped parts at the joints where the beams meet prevent the intersections from opening and increase strength. Triangular panels attached on top complete the structure.
