A new system lets designers freely post and output variable designs
VUILD Inc. (Head office: Kawasaki, Kanagawa; CEO: Koki Akiyoshi; “the Company”) begins offering “EMARF 2.0” ( https://emarf.co ) today.
Launched on April 11, 2019, the custom furniture ordering platform “EMARF” has been operated as a service that lets anyone make original furniture without specialist knowledge, by choosing a ready-made design template and adjusting it to fit their room or body.
“EMARF 2.0,” available from today, adds a feature that allows designers involved in making things to freely post variable design templates. Using this posting feature, designers can share their work with workshops at more than 10,000 locations around the world that own a ShopBot.
Starting with this update, the Company will continue to advance toward its goal of “making everyone a designer.”

■ What’s new in “EMARF 2.0”
In this renewal, we focused on development that makes designers’ work easier to spread.
<Easily create ShopBot cutting data from your own designs>
By uploading data created in the 3D modeling tool “Grasshopper” to “EMARF 2.0” and converting it, you can now automatically generate code that can be cut with ShopBot (1) without going through CAM software. Of course, parametric size adjustment is still available as before. We also provide several existing designs (2), so you can try out the operation, cutting code generation and more within the scope of the specified license (3).
To use it, please download the dedicated “EMARF” plugin for Grasshopper developed by the Company.

Note 1: ShopBot is a US-made 3D wood processing machine built for small workshops and individual makers. Since the company’s founding in 1996, nearly 10,000 units have been installed worldwide, and it is becoming a common global language for woodworking.
Note 2: At launch, only a stool is available.
Note 3: The applicable license is the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/).
Note 4: The URL of the latest tutorial video may change, but new videos will be published on VUILD’s YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGYzMJEz5Z5YNs3XNoYhhRA/) as they become available.
■ More ShopBot partners now linked with “EMARF”
The Company also distributes ShopBot and builds its community, and has installed 45 ShopBots at workshops and educational institutions across Japan. “EMARF” was previously linked with four locations nationwide; with “EMARF 2.0,” we are expanding partner workshops to 21 locations, making ShopBot more accessible.
Through this update, we continue to seek more partners to collaborate with.

■ Future development goals: further expansion from designers, toward a service that is easier for customers to use
“EMARF” began as a service that opens up making to everyone. With the renewal to “EMARF 2.0,” ShopBot becomes
more accessible, and we hope to give designers the opportunity to deliver their work to more people.
To enable more people to become “designers” and instantly output the ideas they picture in their minds as physical objects, we are actively working on the following developments.
- A function that automatically analyzes structures and provides reinforcement feedback
- A sketch input function that lets customers design intuitively
- Access to the more than 10,000 ShopBots installed worldwide
- Support for turning designs into EMARF templates for designers who cannot use Grasshopper
