Overview

A workshop on the ground floor of a housing estate, where residents become makers
A project that began on the ground floor of Building 41 at the UR Akabanedai housing complex after VUILD's proposal was selected in the “Machi to Kurashi Trial Competition” (Town and Living Trial Competition). In 2024, VUILD held a series of workshops, including planning sessions with local residents on how to use the plaza and making sessions with a ShopBot brought on site. From 2025, VUILD took part in developing three labs that carry these activities forward, the Kitchen Lab, the Craft Lab, and the Design Lab, handling everything from spatial and furniture design to fabrication and installation for the Craft Lab. For the other two labs, VUILD fabricated and installed the furniture.

The Craft Lab is equipped with a DesktopMax and DIY tools so that local residents can take part in making things themselves. All the interior fittings were machined with a ShopBot: white-painted MDF is cut with slits based on the silver ratio, forming a tile-like design inspired by paper sizes. Storage compartments are set at an angle to keep boards and tools partly out of sight, balancing the practicality of a workshop with the look of the space.

The fittings, which read like sheets of paper piling up, express a place where ideas emerge from the blank margins. In the Kitchen Lab (interior design: JUNPEI NOUSAKU ARCHITECTS) and the Design Lab (interior design: Tatsuya Orito), VUILD fabricated and installed the furniture.
