Overview

Benches that echo the rules of a Japanese garden, free to be rearranged
Planter benches made as part of the rebranding of SEMBA Corporation's own office. Taking the Japanese garden as a motif, garden conventions such as how stones are set and how empty space is handled were translated to the scale of furniture, and each bench was designed as a polyhedron in which every angle is different. Combining planting and seating, each bench reads as a sculptural object on its own, while several placed together act as boundaries that shape circulation and places to linger. Users can freely change the layout of the space by rearranging them.

A system for changing sizes and selecting shapes through parameters was explored; by holding the design as data rather than as a one-off piece, the benches can be rolled out to other offices and facilities. Seven units were fabricated, finished with glossy spray paint, and fitted with casters so they can be moved. The project is positioned as the first step in joint development between the two companies toward standardization and a product series.
